Quick Guide to Buying Mobile Home Doors

For home owners who live in mobile homes getting a new entry door can be quite a hassle. Standard door heights may not apply and simply going to your local home improvement store such as Lowes or Home Depot likely means you’ll be getting a door that isn’t made for your home. In this article I’ll discuss some of the ways your mobile home door is different and why it matters so much.

Quick Guide to Buying Mobile Home Doors

It happens to many mobile home owners, they buy a door only to attempt to install the door later and find out it doesn’t quite fit right. Most mobile homes don’t have standard doors and when you attempt to put a standard door in a mobile home you run into all sorts of problems. Both during the initial install and later during the doors use as well. I’ll go over below why installing a standard house door should not be done when you need mobile home doors installed.

Size Matters in Mobile Home Doors

Exterior doors on standard homes are the same width as mobile home doors. They come in standard sizes from 36 inches wide to 32 inches wide. The problem occurs on the height of door. Most standard door sizes are 6 foot 8 inches tall while mobile home doors are much less standard. They can range in sizes from 6 feet 0 inches to 6 feet 8 inches. If the door on your mobile home is 6 feet 8 inches tall and 32 or 36 inches wide a standard door may fit in the area. The problem is that most are not 6′ 8″ tall and rather shorter. While this may seem like a small deal it can lead to all sorts of problems when you attempt to install the door.

Since the door is taller than the original door the exterior portion of the home would need to be altered along with the framing. There may not be enough room to place the door in the spot as most mobile home wall heights are not standard size of 93″. This leads to problems where you may need to cut the door in order to make it fit which is not recommended.

Most standard doors are also heavy and the mobile home walls simply can’t support the weight over time. As the door opens and closes it may start to work the wall loose where the door is located. This is especially true if the door is slammed often. In order to really make the most of your home’s door get a door that is lightweight which is what most mobile home doors are.

Get the Door From a Specialty Shop

If your mobile home has door problems and you need a new mobile home door then it’s best to go to a specialty shop that deals with mobile homes. Most home improvement stores such as Lowes or Home Depot will only carry standard size doors however they may be able to order the door for you. Specialty shops that deal particularly with mobile homes is likely your best best to get the new door for your mobile home however.

Installing the Door on Your Mobile Home

If you’re able to get a mobile home door that is the same model as the door you are replacing it can make this job much easier. Most mobile home doors are held in place with 1/4″ screws that are placed around the exterior flange of the door. Simply remove the old door and insert the new door. You’ll want to seal the door frame and if it comes with instructions then be sure to follow the specifications on those instructions for best results.
